Prayer Focus for Hong Kong, China – Sunday, April 17

chnh-MMAP-sm

China, Hong Kong, Asia: Church growth, rapid in the 1960s, slowed in the 1980s and again in the 21st Century. High emigration in the 1990s and following (19% of Christians) was offset by new believers coming into the Church. Hong Kong’s high pressure, competitive environment regarding living space, work hours and education as well as many uncertainties about the future often make people open to the gospel. Fastest growing are large churches and megachurches that incorporate a cell group structure. For more information, go to www.operationworld.org.

Prayer Focus for Chile – Sunday, April 10

chil-MMAP-smChile, South America: The Chilean Church lacks missions vision. Its contribution for its size is very small, with little concern for world evangelization. The country’s geographical and spiritual isolation and political upheaval all contribute to this deficiency. By setting up missions’ training programs, and locally based mission agencies have influenced the Latin American mission’s movement and stimulated some interest in missions. Prayer Focus for Chad – Sunday, April 3

chad-MMAP-sm

Chad, Africa: The number of Muslims seeking to know more of Christ continues to grow. Groups of believers from Muslim backgrounds are slowly beginning to multiply. The development of culturally helpful resources such as chronological Bible storying and Chadian Arabic Christian radio makes a huge difference. Challenge for Prayer

The ascendancy of Islam has increased in the last three decades. Its numerical, financial and social advantages are used to consolidate its dominant position, and animist peoples are being steadily Islamized. Increasing numbers of Muslim northerners are found in the south, with mosques and Muslim schools built in predominantly Christian areas to serve them. Pray for: a) The overcoming of many emotional, cultural and historical barriers to southerners witnessing to Muslims. Most Christians are ill-equipped and somewhat ill-disposed when it comes to sharing the gospel with Muslims, since they are used to operating in tribal languages and ministering to animist peoples. Many resent and fear the economic impact and influence of northern Muslim traders and the environmental impact of northern Muslim herdsmen and their herds. Prayer Focus for Cape Verde Islands – Sunday, March 27

cape-MMAP-smChallenges for Prayer

Economic and ecological problems must be wisely addressed. Scant resources were poorly managed in the past, intensifying Cape Verde’s poverty. Pray for government leaders who will make good decisions and develop the economy for the betterment of the whole nation.

Prayer Focus for Canada – Sunday, March 20

cana-MMAP-smQuebec is a unique region that has experienced in one or two generations the secularization and modernization that took France centuries to accomplish. While mostly French in language and culture, it is increasingly multicultural, with an Anglophone minority and growing immigrant communities. Pray for:

a) Political currents that swirl around the issue of separation from Canada. Although such sentiment has waned of late, it is never far from becoming prominent. Pray that Quebec might make a valuable contribution to the redemptive history of Canada.

b) The Catholic Church dominates Quebecois identity and culture (more than 80% self-identify as Catholic), but not attendance. Quebec’s church attendance rate is Canada’s lowest. There is a demonstrably low commitment to community activities; in particular, church and faith are highly personal and privatized.

c) Evangelicals in Quebec. Protestants are decidedly low in number and evangelical churches regarded as nearly cults. While Protestants are very mixed among French, English and immigrant cultures, there are also a significant number of practicing Catholics with evangelical beliefs. Pray for unity, fellowship and even collaboration.

d) Church planting needs to occur in much greater measure. To bring Quebec up to par with the rest of Canada in the numbers of evangelical congregations, 3,000 more churches must be planted.

Prayer Focus for Cameroon – Sunday, March 13

came-MMAP-smCameroon, Africa: Evangelicals, especially Pentecostals, have grown rapidly in the last 20 years, having had a late start due to the hostility of older denominations. A number of these groups have been started by other African evangelists – in particular Nigerians – rather than by Westerners. Pray for:

  1. a) Greater spiritual unity and cooperation between charismatic and non-charismatic groups. Many older denominations see these younger churches as divisive, fragmented upstarts with poor theology and an unhealthy fixation on signs, wonders and money. Prayer Focus for Cambodia – Sunday, March 6

camb-MMAP-smCambodia, Asia: The Cambodian Church has survived against all odds. Beginning in 1923, CMA missionaries laboured for 47 years before breakthrough began. Then the Church was nearly extinguished during the slaughter of the 1970s; 90% of Christians died or fled to Thai refugee camps – where a great harvest was reaped for the Kingdom. During the 1990s, churches spread to all 19 provinces. For more information go to www.operationworld.org.

Prayer Focus for Burundi – Sunday, February 28

buru-MMAP-smBurundi, Africa: The socio-political situation is one of cautious hope. There have been many encouragements, but threats to the fragile new peace remain. The final rebel group, the FNL, signed the peace accord only in 2008. Pray for these key issues: a) Decades-old enmity between Tutsi and Hutu that boiled into a violent eruption claiming 300,000 lives in the 1990s has simmered down with the peace accord and representational government. The systematic humiliation of Hutus has all but ceased, leading to a more peaceful co-existence. There is widespread intermarriage between these groups. Pray for genuine respect and cooperation as these two peoples build Burundi’s future together. B) The president is a former leader of a rebel Hutu group. He is a believer and has actively sought the counsel of Church leaders on several issues. His relative political inexperience, his past as a rebel fighter and Satan’s desire to tear down Christian leaders each pose a danger; pray for moral integrity, wise advisors and spiritual grace to do the right things in the right way. Prayer Focus for Burkina Faso – Sunday, February 21

burk-MMAP-smBurkina Faso, Africa: The spirit world is very real in Burkina Faso, where, as the saying goes, the population is “50% Muslim, 20% Christian and 100% animist”. The power of the occult has yet to be decisively challenged and broken in many peoples of Burkina Faso. Few countries in West Africa are more dominated by idolatry, fetishism and secret societies. Even in churches, occult power is wielded, hampering and polluting the message of Christ. The most strongly animist groups include the Lobi, Birifor and Dogosi peoples (WEC), Dagara (Canadian Pentecostals, AoG, WEC), Senufo and Bobo (CMA), Lyele (IMB), Karaboro and several smaller groups. Almost all live in the west and southwest of the country. Pray that the power of the risen Christ might be demonstrated for the saving of many. For more information go to www.operationworld.org.

Prayer Focus for Bulgaria – Sunday, February 14

bulg-MMAP-smBulgaria, Europe: Pray for Bulgarian-speaking Muslims in the south have an identity crisis – rejected both by Bulgarians (religion) and Turks (language); a specific ministry is needed to reach them. Only a handful of congregations exist among them, but Bulgarian workers have increased focused prayer and church planting work among this group in recent years. Foreign missions have traditionally found Bulgaria a tricky place in which to minister, yet missionaries and tentmakers who will learn the culture and language are still needed and can play a valuable role. Pray for: a) More workers for the field. There are increasingly open doors and opportunities to serve the Church in Bulgaria through training, teaching and serving. Partnering with nationals to reach the unreached minorities is also a need. b) Missions and money. A sudden and disproportional injection of foreign funds in the 1990s created dependent churches and a negative bias against evangelicals who “buy” converts. A focus on humanitarian work further painted evangelicals with the brush that the gospel is only for the poor and illiterate. Every infusion of money is both extremely useful and potentially damaging. Pray for great wisdom in the use of funds, and against overdependence upon such resources.  For more information go to www.operationworld.org.
